Many people in India grow up believing that saving as much money as possible is essential. From medical emergencies to children’s education and retirement, financial planning often starts early and continues throughout life.

An Indian living in Europe believes that this difference is not only related to personal customs, but also to the systems under which people live. In an Instagram video, he explained why Indians tend to worry about saving more than many Europeans.

He explains four main reasons

Content creator Mukul Anand, who has been living in Europe for nearly 10 years, shared that four major expenses shape the way Indians think about money. According to him, these are healthcare, education, retirement and weddings.

“Why do Indians save so much money while many Europeans seem more relaxed about money?” he asked. Anand wrote on Instagram. He added: “After living in Europe for almost 10 years, I realized that it is not just about the mindset, but about the system. Healthcare, education, retirement, weddings. These four major expenses shape how people think about money and the future.”

Explaining his first point, Anand said that healthcare is one of the biggest reasons why Indians save so much. “Europeans pay for their social security and health care, and it covers them in emergencies. In India, people save for emergencies.”

He said the second reason is education. “Public schools in Europe are mostly free, while Indian parents have to send their children to private schools which costs a fortune.”

He also talked about retirement and weddings. “In Europe, the social fund gives peace of mind, but in India, people work tirelessly to save for their retirement fund,” Anand said, adding: “Indian parents spend huge sums of money on weddings, unlike in Europe.”

He summed it up by saying: “These four costs make Indians always plan, always worry, while Europeans live a little freer!”

Social media shares its views

The video received a mixed response from viewers, with many agreeing that financial responsibilities in India are very different.

“Love your content! Always informative and insightful,” one user wrote. Another commented, “The concept of saving and sending money to parents only exists in a very few countries, like India. In particular, 90s kids have this greater responsibility of being the sole breadwinner of the family, with running the entire household on a meager salary.”

One of them said: “Great indicators.” Another person wrote: “True, but do you know the main reason? It is our population. Our government cannot support such a large population.”
