The harsh chemical environment in this remote lake preserves the animals in strange, statue-like shapes

This lake turns animals into “stone” and scientists know why
There is a lake where animals don’t just die. They turn into something that looks like stone.
Located in northern Tanzania, Lake Natron has become famous for its images of birds and other animals appearing frozen in place, their bodies hardened and preserved in life-like positions.
At first glance, it seems almost unreal.
Sometimes animals that come into contact with the lake end up with a pale chalk coating, as if they have been turned into statues. This effect has led to the idea that the lake somehow “petrifies” anything that touches it.
The truth is a little different, but just as amazing.
Lake Natron is very alkaline. Its water has a pH of 10.5, and sometimes even higher, putting it on par with chemicals like ammonia. In addition, the lake contains a lot of sodium carbonate and other minerals deposited from volcanic activity in the area.
These characteristics of the lake make it a habitable place for life.
When animals die in this area, they end up covered in these minerals. The composition of the water makes the decomposition process slow, and its residues solidify.
But it is important to realize that this does not mean that animals turn to stone immediately after their death. Instead, it creates the conditions that preserve them in a way that makes them appear fossilized.
The stunning images of these ‘stone’ animals were made widely popular by photographer Nick Brandt, who found the preserved birds along the beach and placed them in place to highlight their condition. This project made the world pay attention to the lake and the strange phenomenon that occurs in it.
Although it is an inhospitable place to live, Lake Natron is far from a desert land.
The lake serves an important purpose within nature. It constitutes one of the primary breeding sites for young flamingos, which are able to withstand caustic waters and find a protected nest site without fear of attacks by their enemies.
Hence, although this lake looks scary, it is considered an important element within nature.
It sounds like something mysterious, but in reality it is simply the product of nature at work.
The result is something that seems almost impossible, until you understand what’s really going on.
