Ryan Gosling is ready to appear as a superhero on the big screen. He’s officially taking over the role of Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider, one of Marvel’s most iconic superheroes, in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Not only does this mark the actor’s first ever comic, but it also marks the fiery hero’s first appearance in the franchise.
At the Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, director Shawn Levy made the announcement. The director, who recently collaborated with Gosling on the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter film, introduced him as the MCU’s new Ghost Rider, who will be seen in the iconic leather jacket and flaming skull, replacing Nicolas Cage. “You know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a long time,” Gosling said.
The announcement quickly became a trending topic on social media, as fans debated whether Gosling was the right choice to take over the role from Nicolas Cage, who portrayed the antihero in the 2007 film Ghost Rider and in its 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

“Biggest cut in MCU history”
“Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider is so crazy there’s no shade, I don’t think Nick Cage could top it,” one user said.
“The biggest downgrade in the history of the MCU. Written by Nicolas Cage >>> Ryan Gosling.”
“Ryan Gosling is good, but Nicholas will always be the best ghost rider,” one person said.
Another person said: “Can anyone guarantee that Gosling is a good enough actor for this role? I don’t see it.”
Meanwhile, one person commented, “Gosling playing a flaming skull hero is a left turn, and I’m totally here for it. Shawn Levy is directing the movie as well, and this might be Marvel’s most stylish movie yet.”
“I never expected this. I’m so excited for this. I hope this movie explains a lot about his origin,” one person quipped.
Another user said: “Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider is a perfect choice. Can’t wait to see him tear it up.”
Nicolas Cage first brought Johnny Blaze, known as Ghost Rider, to life in the 2007 film Ghost Rider. The film saw Johnny Blaze transform into Ghost Rider after making a deal with a demon to save his surrogate father’s soul. It is worth noting that Gosling’s wife Eva Mendes portrayed Cage’s love interest Roxanne Simpson in the 2007 film. But she did not reprise her role in the 2011 film.
