According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2, and its epicenter was in the Morón region near the Caribbean coast of Venezuela. Just 39 to 40 seconds later, a second, stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 occurred. Both earthquakes were so close to the Earth’s surface that their impact was extremely devastating. The tremors were so strong that buildings collapsed in cities, including the capital, Caracas, and panic spread among people.

Thousands of people fear they will be affected

In a preliminary assessment, the USGS expressed the potential for heavy loss of life and extensive damage. The agency says the situation could be very serious, although the local administration has not yet announced the final number of dead and wounded. But according to reports, more than 10,000 people are feared to have died due to this earthquake.
