Have you ever wondered what life is like inside prison? Movies, web series, and escape room games often associate prison with adventure and mystery. But in real life, the prison experience is completely different and dangerous.

Nowadays, the trend of “prison tourism”, that is, seeing and understanding prisons and their experience, is rapidly increasing all over the world. People now want to experience things far from books and screens by going to those places where traumatic stories remain captive for years.

A new step in this direction has been taken in India as well. A new trial center called ‘Feel the Jail’ has been set up at Chanchalguda Central Jail in Hyderabad. Besides, the Prison Museum, which was established at the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA), was also inaugurated.

In this unique experience, ordinary people can stay in a prison-like environment for 12 hours or 24 hours as they wish. The fee is around Rs 1,000 for 12 hours of experience and Rs 2,000 for 24 hours. Its aim is not just to entertain, but also to educate people about the prison system and the process of reform and rehabilitation of prisoners.

During this experiment, people are kept in an environment with simple and limited facilities such as a prison. The rooms only have a simple bed, a drinking bowl, and a small bathroom. There are thick iron bars on the windows, which creates a feeling of isolation and imprisonment from the outside world, but at the same time minimal comfort and ventilation are provided.

Besides, in the new prison museum, travelers are given information about the history of prisons, their development and the change of correctional systems over time. This experience forces people to think about how important the role of prisoners is in law, punishment, correction, and society.

This trend is rapidly increasing around the world as well. Old prisons are no longer just closed buildings, but have been converted into museums, memorials and centers of expertise. It is considered part of “dark tourism”, where people go to learn about difficult and painful aspects of history. You can go to 6 prisons in India to get this kind of experience. Such initiatives have also begun in many famous prisons in the world.
