A post on The post also echoed thoughts shared by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who spoke about the increasing value of commerce-based work in the future job market.

The discussion started after a user described his encounter with a plumber in Delhi while getting a shower head and faucet repaired. The short visit resulted in a breakdown of how much a plumber could earn from small day jobs. The user later shared his rough calculations based on what the plumber said about his work pattern of plumbing, electrical repairs, and air conditioning service.

The plumber claimed that he completes about five to six similar tasks every day, fetching approximately Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 from plumbing alone. He also performs electrical repairs and installs and maintains air conditioners during the summer.

Each air conditioning job is said to earn between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000, with two to three such tasks being done daily in the peak season. Based on this, the user estimated daily earnings at Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000, which can add up to Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh per month.

The Internet wonders the numbers and adds the views

The post quickly led to an online debate, with some users questioning the math.

One commentator called this estimate “complete nonsense” and said that most plumbers do not earn much, often getting only Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000 per month due to uneven demand and lack of consistent daily work.

Others pointed out that such jobs are not always available every day, and that doing multiple jobs across locations in one day is not common.

The discussion has also moved to taxes, with some saying many skilled workers are paid in cash while salaried employees face deductions.

At the same time, some users joked about the comparison, with one saying “everyone counts their plumber’s income but they still choose software engineering,” and another noted that direct comparisons are difficult due to tax differences and cash earnings.
