As the temperature rises in the northern parts of India, the forests and wetlands come alive with the singing and presence of many exotic birds that visit to mate, nest and migrate during the summer.

Bird lovers from different places like the foothills of the Himalayas, Aravallis, forests of Uttarakhand and northern plains tend to notice more activity of these birds during the summer.

Here are 10 exotic birds that can be seen in North India during summer:

1. Indian paradise flytrap

This bird is characterized by long white limbs and a shiny black head in male birds. During the summer breeding season, it can usually be seen flying through the forests.

2. Golden Oriole

A bright yellow bird with black wings, the golden oriole tends to be seen most frequently in the orchards and forest edges of northern India.

3. Indian Pitta

The Indian Pitta is also known as “Navrang” due to its range of colors such as blue, green, maroon and yellow. They are usually observed in moist deciduous forests before rains.

4. Blue-throated Barbet

Known for its green body, blue throat, and red crown, this bird is often heard with its loud, metallic calls in the sub-Himalayan forests.

5. Gorgeous Asian

The Asian Koel is known for its frequent chanting sound of “ku oo” and becomes active in the summer. They are usually found near human habitations and forests.

6. Blue-cheeked bee-eater

This type of migratory bird comes from Africa and Europe and is characterized by eating flying insects in open pastures.

7. Blue-tailed bee-eater

This species has a green body and blue tail and is usually found near wetlands or sandy river banks during the summer.

8. Pheasant-tailed jacana

This unique wetland bird has distinctive long feathers on its tail and can be seen walking on floating plants.

9. Common cuckoo

This migratory bird appears during the summer in northern India and is famous for its frequent chirping sound.

10. Himalayan bulbul

The Himalayan bulbul can be easily recognized by its crested head and white facial feathers. This bird is very active in the foothills of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir during the summer.
